Cowes Among Areas Affected By Proposed Traffic Order Changes

Additional no waiting zones outside schools in Cowes and Gurnard are among the latest proposals to revise traffic orders by the Isle of Wight Council.

In the first phase of revisions, residents of Cowes, East Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard will be affected.

Some orders will not change the existing restrictions, however, just update the legal orders to reflect the current road layout.

Changes were agreed between the Isle of Wight Council and police back in 2019 with further approval sought from town and parish councils last year.

Now a formal consultation has been launched by the council for residents of Cowes, East Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard to comment on the proposals in their area.

Details of the proposals have been placed on lamp posts on the streets where changes are proposed but residents can email the council ([email protected]) for copies.

Here are some of the plans proposed:

Cowes:

Along Newport Road, no waiting at any time parking restrictions will be introduced on large stretches of the road for visibility and safety reasons.

Restrictions will also be introduced on Place Road, to allow for road safety and traffic flow, in the form of no waiting at any time areas for the majority of the residential part of the street.

By Cowes Enterprise College on Crossfield Avenue, no waiting at any time restrictions are to be implemented to provide safety.

East Cowes:

More than half of the changes proposed for East Cowes are technically already in place — the traffic revision order is just being updated to correct the order in two cases, and in ten, to correct the road lining to the order.

In Kings Road, however, a no waiting zone will stretch the majority of the carriageway on Friday mornings, between 9am and 11am, when cars will need to move to enable the refuse collection vehicles to get down.

On New Barn Road, the end closet to York Avenue, parking restrictions will be implemented to allow the free flow of traffic, with nothing parked in the way.

Northwood:

Only four roads will have no waiting at any time restrictions introduced or extended further: Cockleton Lane, Venner Avenue, Woodside Close and Wroxall Close, the council say to protect highway assets, allow access and improve road safety and traffic flow.

Gurnard:

Passing places will be formed on Marsh Road to allow the safe movement of traffic.

Close to Gurnard Primary School on Baring Road will be the introduction of a limited waiting area for 15 minutes only, Monday to Friday, 8am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm to improve the street parking at school drop off and pick up times.

This follows a number of traffic incidents outside the primary school in the last few months, including one occasion where a child was hit by a van outside the school entrance earlier this year.

Also on Baring Road but with its junction onto Woodvale Road, sections of no waiting at any time parking restrictions as well as no loading between 8am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4.30pm parking restrictions will be installed to help traffic flow and prevent obstruction to the cycle lane.

Feedback on the proposals can be sent to the council ([email protected]) by June 18.
