Coronavirus: Isle Of Wight Records Further 24 Care Home Deaths

There has been a dramatic rise in care home deaths, linked to coronavirus, on the Isle of Wight.

New figures show 22 people passed away in Island residential homes in the week ending January 22.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published its weekly data this morning (Tuesday).

A further two deaths have also been added to last week's total - both coming in care homes.

Since the start of the pandemic, the figures show 78 coronavirus-related deaths have occurred in care homes, four at home and one at the Island's hospice.

In total, 203 people have now died on the Isle of Wight after testing positive for the illness. St Mary's Hospital has recorded 120 of those deaths.

In January, 95 people have died on the Island with the illness.

NHS England figures, showing daily hospital deaths, are expected to be published later.

Yesterday, the Isle of Wight saw its lowest daily rise in coronavirus cases in more than a month.
