Coronavirus: Fourth December Death Recorded At St Mary's

St Mary's Hospital

Another person has died on the Isle of Wight after contracting coronavirus.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has confirmed a woman in her 70s passed away in St Mary's Hospital last Friday.

The total number of people to have died in St Marys Hospital now stands at 52.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, three Islanders have died this month (December) after contracting the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic 47 people have passed away after testing positive in a care home, three at home and one in the hospice.

But cases appear to be on the decline on the Island, as first reported.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Island has recorded 998 cases of COVID-19.

We are still one of the areas in the country with the lowest case numbers, which ensured the Island was placed in Tier 1 restrictions, the Government will review the measures on December 16.

Local contact tracers have also been operating across the Isle of Wight since last week, despite an initial delay.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS told Isle of Wight Radio:

'A 74-year-old female passed away at St. Mary's Hospital on 4 December having tested positive for COVID-19. The individual had underlying health conditions. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones at this difficult time.'
