Coastguard Teams Tasked To Potential Car Off Cliff Near Freshwater Bay

Fears that a car fell over a cliff near Freshwater Bay - prompted a large scale search by coastguard teams and police last night (Sunday).

HM Coastguard was called at 7pm to Freshwater following concerns for welfare - after car lights were said to be seen on the beach.

Freshwater Independent Lifeboat was tasked to the incident just after 8.30pm alongside coastguard teams from Ventnor and the Needles.

An extensive search, with the Lee-on-Solent helicopter was carried out.

The Military Road was closed for some time overnight between Compton Bay and Freshwater Bay.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

'A 999 call was received just after 7pm yesterday (April 4) reporting a concern for welfare at Freshwater after it was believed car lights were seen on the beach.

'The Coastguard Rescue Teams from Needles and Ventnor, the Lee-on-the-Solent search and rescue helicopter and officers from Hampshire Constabulary carried out an extensive search of the area and nothing was found.'

The Military Road has reopened this morning (Monday).
