Chimney Fire Extinguished In Yarmouth

Freshwater Fire Station

Firefighters from Newport and Freshwater extinguished a chimney fire at a residential property in Yarmouth yesterday evening (Saturday).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said that along with two appliances, a water carrier from Freshwater was also needed to provide water at the remote scene in Wilmingham Lane.

With reports of smoke issuing from the chimney stack and the floorboards in a third-floor bedroom, crews swiftly used a 'chimfirestop' - a device that fills the chimney stack with inert gas, starving the fire of oxygen - to attack the fire from below.

Further crews attacked the fire from above using breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to put out the flames.

Thermal imaging cameras were then used to detect hot spots in the brickwork, which was cooled using stirrup pumps.
