Charities On Fire — Hot Stepping Weekend Planned To Raise Funds For Wight Brainy Bunch

Ryde Fire Station’s Green Watch will begin a circumnavigation of the Island this summer via their own man power with no motorised vessels involved.

Commencing their challenge on the Hovercraft launch pad in Ryde on July 22, they will travel in an anti-clockwise direction around the Island, passing the Needles on day two and St Catherine’s point and Culver Cliff on day three.

They will finish the challenge back at Hovertravel’s landing pad at around 4pm on Sunday July 24 — the exact start time will be governed by Hovercraft movements and tides, but the planned time is approximately 9am.

The idea was presented to Green Watch by their Watch manager Chas Wright who is due to retire in 2023 and wanted to complete one last charity challenge before hanging up his hose.

He has chosen to raise funds for The Wight Brainy Bunch, a charity set up by Green Watch Fire Fighter Mark Grimes following his diagnosis of a brain tumour in 2015 and a subsequent second surgery in 2019.

Mark will be part of the crew taking on this mammoth challenge, which was taken on by Newport’s Green watch 16 years ago to raise funds for the Wessex Cancer Trust.

The generosity of these sponsors will cover all expenses and ensure the maximum amount raised goes directly to The Wight Brainy Bunch, so they can continue to support Island families affected by the devastating effects of Brain Tumours.

Any local businesses which would also like to sponsor the event can contact the charity at: [email protected].
