Carisbrooke Convenience Store To Breathe New Life Into Island Garage

From new motors to milk and bread — an ‘underutilised’ part of an Island garage is set for a new lease of life.

Recently unveiled plans show one half of Carisbrooke Garage, on Carisbrooke Road, is set to become a Premier store.

Mr Vinojan, of Ultra Stores Premier, who already has a number of convenience stores and businesses across the Island, has submitted the plans to the Isle of Wight Council for consideration.

Internal alterations are proposed to refit the showroom, turning it into a retail area.

The garage is currently owned by the Sixers Group, an Island chain of garages and car sales showrooms.

It would not be the first Sixers Garage to be transformed, following the successful business hub created in the former York Avenue Garage in East Cowes.

The store will follow the configuration of a standard Premier store run by Mr Vinojan.

The proposed shop and storage area would be built in part of the existing showroom, replacing the current female and disabled toilet.

Externally, the building is to remain untouched.

If approved, the shop would be open from 7am to 11pm every day.

Norman White, acting on behalf of Mr Vinojan as planning agent, said the store would lead to an increase in economic activity and retail employment on a brownfield site.

A barrier would be installed around the ten-space car park, separating the retail store and garage.

Island Roads has supported the application on the condition the parking spaces — including four for bicycles — and the delivery bay is laid out first before the shop can be used.
