Children on the Isle of Wight who love Lego are being invited to 'borrow a bag' from Newport Library.

It comes as the popular Lego Group - which was running prior to the pandemic for Island children of all ages - was forced to temporarily stop.

Around 20 youngsters would attend the sessions with their parents to get creative -  with their creations then displayed in the library.

In a bid to maintain ‘community spirit’ staff at the library have launched the Lego Library Initiative. You can borrow a bag for a week and complete the challenges set by staff - ranging from making robots to space ships.

The challenges are not compulsory but if you do choose to complete them, you can take photos of what you make and tag the library online.

Charlotte Begg, Senior Library Assistant at Newport Library told Isle of Wight Radio:

‘We have got a huge amount of lego here and we usually run in pre-COVID times a erally popular lego group of children of all ages. It just came about because I was thinking what can we do to reach out to the community that we usually serve and use the lego that has been neglected this year. So I thought about doing a lego library.

‘Cowes library has been doing some fantastic videos with lego creations. Children can borrow a bag for a week and they can take photos of what they make and tag us online if they like so we can praise them for what they’ve made and keep that community spirit going’

All Lego is disinfected and quarantined for 72 hours to ensure COVID-19 procedures are adhered to.

Mums and Dads need to book their slots before they pick up their bag - either by calling 01983 823823 or emailing [email protected]

Step by step challenges can be found here via Cowes Library's website here

You can tag the library staff on Facebook or Twitter, @LordLouisLibrary
