Body Found In Newport Treated As 'Unexplained'

A body discovered in Newport this morning (Tuesday) is being treated as 'unexplained' by police.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, officers were called to the scene near LIDL at around 11.20am.

Hampshire Constabulary has now confirmed the body was found in the water.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

'Officers are on scene after a body was located in water near LIDL, Newport,  at 11.20am. The death is being treated as unexplained and emergency services are on scene.'

Emergency services, including the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and coastguard teams, remain at the incident.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

"The Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ventnor and Needles are currently supporting Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire Constabulary with an incident in Newport. This incident is ongoing."

Police have confirmed a body of a man in his 50s has been recovered.

The death is not being treated as 'suspicious', according to the force. 

A spokesperson said:

"We were called at 11.20am this morning (26 January) following the discovery of a man’s body in water off Riverway, Newport.

"The death of the man, aged in his 50s, is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

"His next of kin have been informed and a file is being prepared for the Coroner."
