Bob Seely Warns Second Lockdown Could Be ‘Devastating’ For The Isle Of Wight

Island MP, Bob Seely has called for a ‘keep calm and carry on’ approach amid debate on a ‘devastating’ second lockdown.

Mr Seely has urged for the need for a “balance” between the risks of Covid and many other risks, such as the loss of education for children and the damage to mental health.

He warned of the effects a second lockdown could have on the livelihoods of Islanders and believes the government should develop a strategy for living with the virus - instead of drifting in and out of lockdowns.

Mr Seely also called for the government to give people a medium and long-term sense of what the future is likely to hold – suggesting a ‘keep calm and carry on’ approach.

If approved by MPs on Wednesday, the new lockdown measures will come into force this Thursday (5) and remain in place until December 2.

Key restrictions will include:

  • Pubs and restaurants closed, except for takeaways.
  • Non-essential shops, leisure and entertainment venues will be closed, including gyms.
  • Households will not be allowed to mix indoors or in private gardens, unless in your support bubbles.

However, schools, universities and colleges will remain open.

Outdoor exercise, such as running is encouraged and you can meet one person outside, with social distancing.

Speaking at a debate in the Houses of Commons, he said:

“I know that everyone making these decisions, that would devastate the lives of others, are all in pretty much secure jobs.

“Not one of us here is facing the same stress as the freelancers, the business people, the artists, the musicians, pub and restaurant owners.

“I have many of those folks on the Isle of Wight whose lives are now on hold and whose ability to earn a living has been shattered, despite the tiny risks to many of them.”
