Belgrave Road 'Safety Concerns' Prompt Ventnor Esplanade Footway Closure

Further 'movement' on Ventnor's Belgrave Road has led to the closure of the footway on the esplanade.

Island Roads says it has shut the path on Esplanade Road as a 'precautionary measure'.

Wire mesh has been in place on Belgrave Road since last year, to contain debris should it fall.

However, following heavy rain, a 'small part' of the retaining wall has shifted causing safety concerns.

An Island Roads spokesperson said:

"The new movement appears to be further ‘settling’ – in other words the failed section has slumped further into its foundations.

"The movement has coincided with the exceptionally heavy rainfall on Monday morning and has occurred despite the steps in place to divert surface rainwater away from the site."

"While the wire mesh in place to retain material and protect pedestrians below has not been breached, the decision to close Esplanade Road has been taken as a precautionary measure in the interests of safety."

Island Roads says it will monitor the site and progress plans to stabilise the retaining wall and rebuild the road.

Ventnor was badly affected by flooding earlier this week. Isle of Wight Radio reported how cracks started to appear in Shore Hill.
