Aviaries Flooded As Water Rips Through Haven Falconry

Staff at Haven Falconry are appealing for help after yesterday's flooding claimed thousands of pounds worth of supplies and left its aviaries flooded.

The flood water may have started to subside but the clean-up operation at the centre has only just begun.

Customers have even rolled up their sleeves to help today (Monday).

Charlotte Gladdis, who co-owns the falconry, says staff turned up for their shift this morning to find expensive stock washed away.

Speaking exclusively to Isle of Wight Radio, she said:

"As we've done our checks, we went to check the river as it kind of goes through the bottom part of the centre. We've been hold all of our supplies at the bottom part of the centre and we've lost literally all of our supplies. They're wrapped around trees.

"We had all of our pallets that we were going to use for maintenance and stuff that were donated to us. That's all gone down the river. There's thousands of pounds of stuff that's just absolutely ruined. It looks like a huge landslip."

None of the animals have been affected, but Charlotte says some of the aviaries have flooded.

Staff are working to remove as many items as they can from the river, to avoid any environmental repercussions.

In the meantime, Charlotte is asking anyone who can lend a helping hand to get in touch.

"We don't know whether this weather is going to come back or we're going to have another large rainfall. We don't want more of it going down the river. It's more just salvaging what stuff we can use and what stuff we can't use.

"The stuff we can't use, we're going to have to remove, which comes at another cost. With the lockdowns and the 16 weeks of bird flu. Myself and Sam have only owned the place a year, almost. It seems to be something going constantly wrong and we can't afford to be able to get all of this stuff removed. Any help hat anybody can give us would be amazing."

If you can help, you can call the falconry on (01983) 716556.

Havenstreet was among the worst affected areas yesterday.

Police were tasked with diverting traffic and clearing knee-deep water from under the bridge.

Binstead was also hit by up to 50mm of rainfall, as Isle of Wight Radio reported.

A flood alert is no longer in place at Ryde Monktonbrook, but remains in force for the Eastern Yar at Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone.
