Alverstone Shute Closed As Tankers Used For Southern Water Repairs

Alverstone Shute has been closed for Southern Water repairs.

As previously reported, yesterday (Tuesday), Main Road was shut from its junction with the Sandown to Newport Cycle Track to repair a burst water main.

The spill has stopped, according to Southern Water.

It says tankers are being used to maintain flow and ensure people can continue to use their bathroom and kitchens as normal.

Tankers also help reduce the risk of further damage to the environment.

Due to the use of tankers, Alverstone Shute has been closed.

Diversions are in place and will affect the following streets:

  • Alverstone Road
  •  Alverstone Shute
  •  Borthwood Lane - Access Road
  •  Brading Footpath 64
  •  Golf Links Road
  •  Lake Hill
  •  Longwood Lane
  •  Lower Road
  •  Main Road
  • Newport Road
  • Sandown and Shanklin Bridleway 46
  • Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 35
  •  Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 35a
  •  Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 45
  •  Sandown Road
  •  The Fairway and Whitecross Lane

A spokesperson for Southern Water told Isle of Wight Radio:

'Repairs to a burst wastewater main in the Alverstone area are progressing and we thank our customers for their patience while we complete this work as quickly as possible.

'The spill was stopped yesterday afternoon. We will continue to work closely with the EA to minimise the impact to the environment.

'Tankers are being used to maintain flow and ensure people can continue to use their bathroom and kitchens as normal. Tankers also help reduce the risk of further damage to the environment.

'Due to the use of tankers we have had to close Alverstone Shute. This will remain closed to protect the safety of our workers until the repair is completed. We are working to do this as quickly as possible.
