A Month's Rain Falls In Six Hours In Ryde

A month's worth of rain has fallen in just six hours in Ryde, leading to flood alerts being issued.

The Environment Agency has said the water level in the Monktonmead Brook is high and rising.

It said:

"In the last six hours, more than a month's rain (50mm) has fallen at Ryde. This is an exceptional amount in a short period of time.

"From 4am this morning (Tuesday), water will begin to flow across the railway tracks, upstream of St Johns Station. Flood water will be fairly deep.

"Rain continues to affect the area over the next 6 hours with a further 10mm expected. The river is likely to peak around 5am. It will remain high for several hours and may not begin to fall until around 8am. We continue to monitor the forecast.

"Our operational staff are keeping the Monktonmead Brook clear of blockages. Please consider moving vehicles from depots located next to the river and railway line."

A Flood Alert has also been issued for the Eastern Yar.

The Environment Agency said:

"The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising. In the last four hours, 25 mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall. This is a very large volume of rain in a short period of time.

"Water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank. Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. We do not expect access issues at Horringford or significant impacts at Sandown. Property flooding is not currently expected.

"At Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until at least 7am. We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.

"In Alverstone, pumps used to protect gardens from flooding may be required to operate."
