80% Of St Mary's Hospital Staff Receive COVID Vaccine

Around 80 per cent of staff at St Mary's Hospital have been given the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, according to the Isle of Wight NHS Trust Chief Executive.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio's Topping in the Morning, Maggie Oldham, said she was very pleased with how the vaccination roll out is going.

In addition to the hospital staff, Ms Oldham said that about 2,000 care workers in the community had also been vaccinated.

Ms Oldham said:

"We've been able to vaccinate about 80% of staff across the NHS Trust. We also have around 2,000 of social care workers and other healthcare workers who have received the jab.

"We've been working with the fire service, because we have so many staff sick and affected by COVID in our ambulance service.

"We have been very grateful to the fire service and we have been able to vaccinate those colleagues who are joining us on the frontline.

"I have had terrific feedback from everyone who has has the vaccine and would encourage everyone to have it when they get their invite. As long as we keep getting the vaccine, we will be able to continue rolling it out.

"We've had no problems with the distribution of the vaccine and so far, so good for us."

Ms Oldham added that the hospital is coping, but people need to follow the social distancing guidelines.

She said:

"It can take some time from people being diagnosed with COVID to then requiring hospital care and treatment if they need it. We will see high levels of activity over the next two to three weeks at the hospital.

"The level of activity is much higher in this second wave compared to the first - and it is lasting a lot longer.

"We are very busy across the Trust."
