10-Mile Challenge For Isle Of Wight Teen With "Very Rare" Neurological Condition

An Isle of Wight teenager, who is thought to be one of the only females in the world with rare neurological condition MECP 2 Duplication Syndrome, is embarking on a 10-mile challenge to raise funds for charity.

With the help of her family, Amelia Burns is taking on the Red Squirrel trails from Newport to Sandown next month (May).

On either the 1, 2 or 3 May (weather permitting), she will be pushed in her wheelchair and undertake a short walk once every half hour or so.

Amelia was diagnosed with the rare, life-limiting condition at the age of just three.

Her family were told she would be unlikely to make her teenage years and the effects of her condition mean she is both physically and mentally disabled.

However, she will be turning 17 in August, and her family are also hoping to re-celebrate her 16th after the pandemic put a hold on some events.

Although MECP 2 Duplication Syndrome mainly effects males, at the time of Amelia's diagnosis her family says she was the first female diagnosed in the UK and thought to be only the second case in the world.

Dad, Daniel, said:

"We would love for you to join us by completing your own 10 mile walk across that weekend and if so we would like to suggest a minimum of £10 for each walker if you can afford to do so, alternatively, if you don’t feel up for a walk but still wish to donate, please feel free to do so.

"To bring some extra fun to the proceedings, please join in with the red squirrel theme in some shape or form; we will leave it to your very active imaginations! Feel free to share with me though!

"If you are able to pass around your friends and colleagues too, I would be most grateful."

Money raised will go towards charity When You Wish Upon a Star, which helps make dreams come true for children with life-limiting conditions.
