Newport Teen Club Night Ends Early After Disorder And Police Response

An under-18s fundraising event in Newport has been brought to an early end after reports of disorder at the venue.

Police were called to Strings on Orchard Street on Saturday night following reports of anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and violence towards security staff.

At least nine police vehicles attended the town centre as officers dealt with the situation.

The venue was evacuated, with hundreds of young people spilling out onto the streets.

Several people were detained on South Street and St James’ Street, while police worked to disperse crowds from the area.

The event had been organised by parents alongside Strings Bar and Venue to raise money for local Scouts preparing for an international expedition to the USA next year.

It was intended to be a supervised, alcohol-free night for 13 to 17-year-olds.

However, the venue says the event had to be stopped after some attendees allegedly caused damage, smoked in the toilets and became violent towards security staff.

A spokesperson for Strings said:

“Due to some anti-social behaviour, damage to our venue, smoking in toilets and violence towards our security staff, this fundraising event for local Scouts arranged by parents in partnership with Strings had to be cut short.

“We are extremely disappointed for those attending who were behaving appropriately.”

The venue has not said whether any future under-18s events will be affected.
