Families can explore the Isle of Wight’s prehistoric past with fossil hunts and rock pooling sessions at Fort Victoria during October half-term.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Ranger Service is organising guided coastal walks throughout the week, with visitors able to discover fossils and marine wildlife.

A special Fossil Fun Day will take place on Monday 26 October, with a free drop-in event in the Corner Room from 11am to 1pm.

Visitors can learn about local fossils, including ancient fish, turtles and crocodiles, and bring along their own finds for identification.

A guided fossil hunt will follow at 2pm, led by the Ranger Service and fossil expert Dr Martin Munt.

Other guided sessions will take place on Wednesday 21 October at 1.30pm, Thursday 22 October at 2pm, Friday 23 October at 2pm and Tuesday 27 October at 2.30pm.

No booking is required. Participants should meet outside the Rangers Office at Fort Victoria.

Sessions last between one and one-and-a-half hours and cost £3 per person or £10 per family.
