A driver has been detained after a Fiat 500 overturned and came to rest on its roof on Middle Road yesterday afternoon (Monday).

Police were called at around 4:36pm following reports of a single-vehicle collision on Calbourne Road.

Officers arrived to find the car overturned and the driver had left the scene on foot.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary launched a search of the surrounding area, including for any passengers who may have been in the vehicle.

A man was subsequently located and detained by officers on Betty Haunt Lane.

The circumstances surrounding the collision have not been confirmed.

Firefighters from Newport attended the scene as a precaution, while Middle Road was temporarily closed in both directions.

Motorists were diverted locally via Forest Road.

The vehicle has since been recovered and the road has reopened.
