Council Issues Hot Tub Safety Warning For Island Holiday Accommodation

The Isle of Wight Council is reminding holiday accommodation providers to carry out proper hot tub safety checks amid concerns over the risk of Legionella bacteria.

The council’s Environmental Health team will be contacting and visiting hotels, guesthouses and holiday lets across the Island as part of a safety awareness campaign.

Hot tubs can become a health risk if not correctly maintained, with warm water providing ideal conditions for bacteria such as Legionella to develop.

In rare cases, exposure can lead to Legionnaires’ disease — a serious form of pneumonia.

Symptoms can include high fever, coughing and shortness of breath, with older people and those with underlying health conditions most at risk.

The council says anyone who becomes unwell after using a hot tub should seek medical advice immediately.

The campaign follows national guidance from the Health and Safety Executive and is aimed at supporting businesses to manage risks rather than taking enforcement action.

Rachel Briscoe said hot tubs are a popular feature in accommodation across the Island, but must be properly managed to avoid serious health risks.

She said the initiative is designed to help businesses understand their responsibilities and ensure the correct safety measures are in place.

Karen Lucioni, chair of the environment and community safety committee, said visitors expect high standards of safety and the campaign supports local businesses in meeting those expectations.

She added that maintaining good hygiene and proper risk management is essential to protecting guests and supporting the Island’s tourism industry.

Accommodation providers are being reminded they have a legal duty to manage water system safety, including hot tubs and spa pools.

The council is urging operators to carry out regular checks, keep records and follow official guidance.
