Beachgoers Urged To Dispose Of Fishing Tackle Safely

The Isle of Wight Council is reminding anglers and beach visitors to dispose of fishing tackle responsibly after discarded hooks were found at Fort Victoria.

The appeal follows an incident in which a local dog needed emergency veterinary treatment after a fishing hook became lodged in its tongue while walking at the country park near Yarmouth.

The council says although most anglers act responsibly, even a single hook or length of fishing line left behind can pose a serious risk to people, pets and wildlife.

Visitors are being encouraged to check the area before leaving, take unwanted tackle home and safely dispose of any hazardous items they find where appropriate.

The council says simple actions can help keep the Island's beaches safe and enjoyable for everyone while protecting local wildlife and the environment.
