Lady Gaga Visits Assange Holed Up In Embassy

Tue, 09 October 2012 4:30PM

Lady Gaga has visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London - where he has been granted diplomatic asylum.

Gaga, 26, was in the UK to launch her new fragrance, Fame by Lady Gaga at Harrods.

She had apparently been invited to visit Assange by British singer/songwriter M.I.A. on Sunday, but left it until Monday to visit the Australian activist and have dinner with him.

Assange has been subject to a European arrest warrant since December 2010 in response to a Swedish police request for questioning in relation to a rape and sexual assault investigation.

He has been holed up in the embassy since June this year, and the UK Government has said it intends to extradite the 41-year-old to Sweden when he leaves the building.

Assange does not want to go to Sweden to face the allegations because he claims it is just a pretext to his subsequent extradition to the United States.

Both Assange and WikiLeaks have been designated "enemies of the United States" by the Department Of Defence after his organisation and media outlets began to publish leaked US military and diplomatic documents.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, did not comment on her meeting with Assange, but posted a photo of her standing next to him on her Little Monsters social networking site.

The picture appeared without a headline, but Gaga's fans were largely supportive of her decision to meet Assange.

Gaga's fans are known as little monsters, and one called Magdalena posted: "It's so funny that people think he's a 'terrorist' just because he says the truth. 'In a world full of lies, the one who tells the truth is known as revolutionary'."

Another little monster, Charles Lowe, said: "Julian Assange! Boo Yeah! Freedom of speech always wins!"

However, not all of Gaga's fans have been so supportive of her in recent days.

She angered fans outside Harrods after she arrived an hour late for her promised appearance and dashed inside before many had caught a glimpse of her.

Hundreds of screaming fans filled the streets around the London department store ahead of the UK launch of her new perfume.

But the screams turned to boos after the Poker Face star refused to walk the full length of a specially themed black carpet - and then went inside before some had even seen her.
