Ashton Kutcher Home Targeted By Hoax 911 Call

Thu, 04 October 2012 10:32AM

Los Angeles police are investigating a hoax 911 call that led to officers arresting occupants of the Hollywood Hills home of actor Ashton Kutcher.

A woman rang police to say robbers were inside the house and that she had locked herself in one of the mansion's bathrooms after three gunshots were fired.

Police rushed to the scene, with TV pictures showing footage of three people leaving the property with their hands up as they were arrested by officers.

But the call is now being investigated as another case of "swatting".

"Swatting" is the name given to a fake emergency call that leads to a response team being sent to the scene.

The name comes from the police SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams that are often dispatched for these types of calls by US police.

Miley Cyrus is believed to have been the victim of a "swatting" prank in August.

Authorities were called to her home following the report of a disturbance but found no sign of trouble.

In response to the claims Kutcher, who was not at home when the call was made, posted a message on Twitter saying he was "safe and sound".

It is understood the three people detained by officers were staff renovating the property and were later released.

Police say the hoax caller could face criminal charges.
