'Speeding Drink Driver' Kills Teens At Bus Stop

Sat, 22 September 2012 5:44PM

At least six teenagers were among seven people killed after a motorist smashed his car into a bus stop in Moscow.

Police have suggested the 29-year-old man, Muscovite Alexander Maximov, was driving under the influence of alcohol and was speeding at 125mph (200kph) when his white Toyota mounted the kerb and plowed into the victims.

Moscow's emergency services said the vehicle hit the bus stop with such force that it was dragged 20 metres along the pavement, scattering the victims in all directions.

Four further bystanders were injured in the accident, which took place in west Moscow near the city's film studios.

"According to preliminary information, the driver was under the influence of alcohol," a Moscow police spokesman told the Interfax news agency.

"There is a possibility that he was under the influence of drugs as well as alcohol," another police source is reported to have said.

Photographs of the scene showed the demolished bus shelter alongside bodies that were covered with emergency blankets.

Maximov is being treated in hospital for concusion and bumps and bruises.Russian news website LifeNews.ru published video of him handcuffed and with his head wrapped in bandages.

According to the website, "the entire Moscow police command" raced to the scene as soon as they were alerted to the accident.
