Wimbledon Semis: Pressure Mounts On Murray

Fri, 06 July 2012 2:42AM

The hatches have well and truly battened down in the Murray camp.

No-one is talking. Not mum Judy, not coach Ivan Lendl (mind you when did he ever speak?) and not the British Davis cup captain Leon Smith who used to coach Murray as a boy.

No-one wants to ratchet up expectations any further.

They all know how big an opportunity lies ahead for their boy today.

Bunny Austin was the last British man to reach the Wimbledon final in 1938 and if Murray beats Jo Wilfried Tsonga he will equal that achievement. And he should.

Tsonga is a great player but he is no Rafael Nadal.

Murray has fallen to the Spaniard twice in the semis here.

But in Tsonga the Scot has an opponent he knows how to beat. He has done it five times before and twice on grass.

It is not a done deal but the omens are good.

Plus, would anyone have lived with the ruthless Andy who showed up for the fourth-set tie-break against David Ferrer?

Braveheart, maybe?

Tickets for the men's semis have already been allocated but will set you back around £2,000 on online websites. That is about 20 times face value.

A ground pass to sit on Murray Mount/ Henman Hill might be well worth queuing for.

Eight quid, just to be able to say: "I was there when he did it!"
