Picture Of Face-Eating Attack Victim Released

Tue, 12 June 2012 11:31PM

Doctors in the US have released a photograph of the homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre 'cannibal' attack.

The photo reveals Ronald Poppo missing his nose and with much of his face covered in scabs.

His eye sockets are covered with gauze and what appears to be a skin graft.
Poppo has been recovering at a Miami hospital since he was attacked alongside a busy highway last month.

Randy Eugene, 31, was shot and killed by police officers who arrived on the scene.

It is not clear what led him to attack 65-year-old Poppo or whether the victim has been able to talk to police.

Locals dialled 911 after seeing the naked Eugene swinging from a lamp-post just before the attack.

Surveillance cameras from a nearby building recorded Eugene stripping Poppo and beating him before appearing to lie on top of him.

A post-mortem has reportedly revealed there was no human flesh in Eugene's stomach but there were a number of undigested pills.

It will take a number of weeks to complete toxicology tests which might reveal whether the pills played a part in the violent attack.

Some human flesh was discovered lodged between Eugene's teeth and pieces were also found on the ground close to the scene of the attack.

Last week, Eugene's girlfriend said she always felt safe with him and that he must have been drugged without his knowledge before the attack.

Yovonka Bryant told reporters: "I felt safe with Rudy. He never drank alcohol or used drugs around me.

"I only saw him smoke a marijuana cigarette once."

She said they had never discussed cannibalism or voodoo, but that they did take bible classes together and liked to watch a morning TV religious show together.

Bryant was the second woman to come forward and identify herself as a girlfriend of Eugene.

The other woman, who asked not to be named, told the Miami Herald: "Something happened out of the ordinary that day.

"I don't want him to be labelled the Miami Zombie."
