Specially trained police are preparing to speak to a 94-year-old woman who was attacked while she was asleep in her bed at home.
Emma Winnall, from Moseley in Birmingham, was assaulted in bed overnight between Monday and Tuesday this week in an attack which left her with a fractured skull, a broken arm and wrist, a partially severed finger and other multiple injuries.
She is in hospital having undergone emergency surgery, including having metal plates inserted into her arm.
Detectives investigating the incident have so far been unable to determine a motive for the attack.
Enquiries are continuing and local reassurance patrols in the area are continuing, with police appealing to local communities for help in tracing the person responsible for the attack.
Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police on the 101 number or the independent charity Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
A photograph of Mrs Winnall in hospital was released at the request of her daughter as part of a police appeal for information.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarb Johal said police believed "an implement of some sort" was used in the attack.
