Director Sam Mendes has revealed the new 007 film will look at a more complex James Bond character - when the MI6 agent was depressed about being a killer.
Speaking in Istanbul where the new film is currently shooting, the Oscar winner said he had gone back to the original novels to look at the troubled psyche of the MI6 agent.
"What Fleming created was a very conflicted character," he told reporters.
Mendes added that he could not have made it without Daniel Craig as 007.
"Some of those things are explored in this movie because Daniel as an actor is capable of exploring them and I am interested in exploring them too," he said.
"That was a big thing for me, having a Bond who I believed in, who I felt could take the character to a new level."
Sky's Lucy Cotter, who has been on the Bond set in Istanbul, said: "Sam Mendes said they have gone back to the original Fleming books and looked at Bond when he was less of an international playboy and more of a, quite depressed, MI6 operative who was depressed about being a killer."
Mendes and Craig also spoke about how they were glad of the extra time they were afforded when film studio MGM was facing financial difficulties and the project was put on hold.
Craig revealed that he and Mendes broke protocol by contacting each other about the film.
"We weren't supposed to talk to each," he admitted. "There were all sorts of legal ramifications, but we did, you couldn't shut us up about it. We were very excited."
Mendes added: "The MGM delay allowed us the time to think about the story...and in that time Daniel was able to articulate the areas that the character could go."
The director, who won an Oscar for American Beauty in 1999, also revealed it would be a "thriller" but there would be some "humour" as well.
Skyfall is set to be released internationally in October.
