RACE FOR LIFE REINSTATED

Friday, February 5th 2010 16:22

Isle of Wight Radio can confirm that Cancer Research have reinstated their Race for Life on the Island.

It follows pressure from supporters and Isle of Wight Radio, after news last month that the women-only event was cancelled.

Cancer Research UK originally said the number of participants was falling, but it has now reviewed its decision.

Louise Kemp, Senior National Event Manager, said: "These are exceptional circumstances in which the strong swell of local support, coupled with the difficulty in travelling to an alternative Race for Life on the mainland, mean that we have decided to bring the event back for 2010."

The date and the venue for the 5k women-only race is still to be confirmed.

Claire Howarth, who organised a Facebook campaign to gain support to get the race reinstated, gave her reaction to IW Radio: "Very, very pleased, especially as I'd spoken to Cancer Research a few times in the last couple of weeks and they'd said that they wouldn't be reinstating it, so it was a shock and I'm very pleased to hear it.

"I think it's because of the fantastic support that we've received on the Facebook page and also through Isle of Wight Radio," Claire added.

The charity says anyone who has already registered for alternative events on the mainland and wants to transfer back to the Isle of Wight Race for Life can do so without paying for another registration fee.

  3. I trust that there is a Race for Life on the Island this year (2010). The reason I query it is because I have just come off the phone from speaking to their Head Office. They told me that Race for Life is not on this year but will be next year (2011). Can someone please clarify the situation.
