APOLOGY AND ASSURANCE GIVEN TO LABOUR CANDIDATE
Monday, February 8th 2010 11:34
Assurances have been given to the Island's Labour candidate in the forthcoming general election that he won't have to resign from his job.
It follows a public row between the Isle of Wight Council Chief Executive, Steve Beynon, and parliamentary candidate, Mark Chiverton.
Mr Chiverton had earlier criticised an ultimatum he says he was given by his employer that he chose between his position at the IW council and his candidacy.
Mr Beynon had previously denied that Mr Chiverton, who is also branch secretary for the union Unison, had been asked to decide.
But, in a statement, he says he's now issued written assurance to Mr Chiveron and says he regrets the period of misunderstanding and for any distress caused.
Steve Beynon is due to meet with Mark and his regional representative on Tuesday 9 February.
One of the aims is to "explore ways in which the Council and Unison can move forward on a number of outstanding issues such as facilities time and car allowances."
