Tories Accused Of Ignoring The Public

Friday, January 27th 2012 15:18

Conservative councillors on the Isle of Wight are being accused of failing to listen to the public.

Last Saturday a group of Independent councillors held a meeting in Newport called 'The State of the Island Debate'.

It was designed to allow people to have their say on issues affecting the Island and was attended by around 70 people.

However, a report of the meeting, which was circulated to all councillors on Wednesday, was branded 'a load of drivel' by one conservative.

Councillor Roger Mazillius said, "The debate was entirely in the hands of the Independent group. They chose to produce this particular debate, backed up with what they call public comment. We're perfectly entitled to say well that's fine, we love the public having their say and we listen to them carefully but if you're going to produce a load of drivel, at least in some parts, then we shall say so."

Meanwhile, during the meeting on Wednesday, the leader of the conservatives, David Pugh, said "I know there are challenges, but I do not see much here that amounts to a way forward."

The Independents argued they'd called the meeting because, in their view, there is no real forum outside of the council chamber for people to express their views.
