Our Island has a very strong community spirit - and you will often find that there are people who drive that spirit, either leading the pack, or behind the scenes working hard - or perhaps they are
people that inspire, who show determination and rise above whatever challenges are put in front of them...
We've teamed up with Sainsbury's to find the Islands' Heroes and honour them at a glitzy awards evening in October in the stunning surroundings of Albert Cottage.
Thank you for your nominations - the judges now have the sometimes difficult task to chose our Local Hero's for 2011!
Do you have a pet that has made a difference to you or someone you know? A working animal, a guide or hearing dog? Or an animal that has brought special comfort to you or someone else? Let us know about a special animal that stands out from the herd for our Pet Of The Year.
This award is to recognise someone in our county who helps raise funds for some of the amazing charities we have in the area. It will not necessarily go to the person who has raised the most amount of money – but someone who really gives their heart and sole to either one or numerous charities.
Bravery can shine through in many different ways. This award is to recognise an individual who has shown great courage in any situation. Whether it’s saving someone from peril, or just overcoming a bad situation – we want to hear about them.
This award will recognise a very special care worker. Maybe they work full time as well as looking after a loved one, or perhaps they are just always there for you no matter what and constantly go above and beyond the call of duty in helping others.
The award is to recognise a member of the police, fire, ambulance, coastguard, mountain and sea rescue services, whether paid or a volunteer who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others. These brave people are so often unsung heroes as it is seen as their job – so help change that.
Everybody needs good neighbours and we want to find the best neighbour on the Isle of Wight. Someone who is always ready to give you a cup of sugar and baby-sits the kids when you need a night off. Perhaps the family next door have gone a step further to help you?
This award will go to a person or a team – young or old who has achieved something great in the sportingworld. Maybe against all odds, or perhaps you know a rising star who is excelling at junior level, done their Island proud during the recent Island Games and may be a star of the 2012 Olympics.
Inspirational Teenager Of The Year
Do you know a teenager who has made a difference? A young person that has made an impression, that has overcome adversity, or has maybe turned their life around? Let us know who you think should be our Inspirational Teenager Of The Year.
This award is designed to recognise an individual or business that has gone above and beyond in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint, or someone from
This award will go to someone who has done something to improve the local community. This could be a neighbourhood watch member who works tirelessly to make your community a safer place, or perhaps someone who campaigned for a new playpark for local children. If you know anyone who has made a difference in your community, we want to know about them.
The Asa Singleton Courageous Child
This award is to recognise a child under the age of 16 who has excelled in a certain situation. Do you know a child who has battled against the odds to succeed? Perhaps you have a young mastermind in the family, or an up and coming sport star? Maybe you know a child who looks after a poorly parent or has overcome personal adversity and does it with a smile...
