Go to the IOW County Press Live Wired Page
LIVE/WIRED, the search for the Island's best original music talent, is back. The deadline has passed - now it's time to get voting! You can listen to the tracks at the Live/Wired page on the Isle of Wight County Press website - but here is a description of all the bands...
The County Press, in association with Platform One and Isle of Wight Radio, is looking for the best bands and solo artists on the Island and offering them the chance to play at the Isle of Wight Festival, win a recording session and radio airplay.
In a change from previous years, there will be just one on-line round, when acts will have their track and biography featured on the County Press Live/Wired site (scroll down to find out how to enter).
Fans will have the chance to hear each of the tracks and vote for their favourites, and the six with the most votes will go through to a live final in April.
At stake is one of the biggest prizes in Island music.
The winners will scoop the chance to play alongside Foo Fighters, Kasabian and Kings of Leon at the Isle of Wight Festival in June thanks to Platform One.
They will also be featured in a special session on Glyn Taylor's Live and Local Isle of Wight Radio show and have the chance to record an EP at Platform One's Newport studios.
All of the acts who enter will have their track played on Isle of Wight Radio and finalists will be featured by Glyn on his show.
Last year's winners, Whisky River, were cheered to victory by hundreds of fans at Ryde Theatre.
The blues act, fronted by Damien Paul, were up against stiff competition from The Scores, Alex Mountford, The Golden Strands and Vanzatti.
They were chosen by a panel of industry judges made up of top music producer Andy Gray-Ling, drummer of Go Audio Andy Booth and Island music promoter Vic King.
Driver
Line-up:
Pete 'Nosta
Carl Perkins
Staf Brett
Biography:
Driver’s music is in the broadest and simplest terms modern high energy dance rock. Formed in 1999 almost a year after Staf and Carl had first met with Pete (at his Auckland recording studio in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight,) the seeds of Driver grew, at least partly, out of remixes Pete and his co producer Mark Toms (together known as recording artists ‘Arcane’) had done of two Hightown Crow songs. Hightown Crow were a Stones influenced rock and roll four piece playing originals and the odd AC/DC cover which had dissolved in the Summer of 1999 in order to make way for something more vibrant and contemporary. Driver played across England in the Spring and Summer of 2000 including slots at GuilFest where one reviewer memorably wrote ‘If this band were a dog it would be a Rottweiler on heat’ and headlining the Newport Millenium Festival. They arrived like a whirlwind, injected an energy rarely seen and blew out. Through various solo ventures (that saw Staf working with Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey among other notables) it seems the intervening decade has allowed them to gather their resources and now, in a climate that fits, they’re ready. Are You?!?

We source our energy to play/record where possible from renewable sources including a six metre mobil wind turbine. Last October we released "Dance Music For Drunks" which increased our profile. A recent exhibition of ours "We R The Cassette Recorders" made local news because the library banned three images we had exhibited, and increased our profile further.
The track we have chosen to represent our sound for Live / Wired 2011 is "Turbine Disko Number 2" an original composition by The Cassette Recorders.

Nine months ago saw the debut of new band Pleasurade, since then the five islanders have been honing their unique progressive punk rock sounds. The change in line up brought with it a fresh approach to their tracks. Taking on a more rock sound their latest songs lean towards Kings of Leon/Foo Fighters. This new direction has also expanded their fan base and opened up new opportunities both on and off the Island with venues on the south coast, London and Italy on the horizon.

Hank
Line-up:
Hank – Vocals, Guitars
Hank Jr. – Bass guitar
Big Mac – Drums
I live in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, but I've spent a lot of time in different places. I was in Texas for a while - in the wall-furnishings department. After they shut down, B&Q refused me a job, so I took up the guitar, and I’ve been playing Country music ever since.
Me and the band love Country music, but we appreciate all the styles, both Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Track: Love thy Dawg

Yours and Mine
Marc Dyer — Vocals/Guitar
Nate Webber — Drums
Gary Jones — Bass
Yours & Mine are a three-piece indie-pop outfit, formed on the Isle of Wight in early 2011.
The band’s unique & catchy sound could easily be compared to classic bands such as The Ronettes, Elvis Costello & The Supremes, but is also unmistakably "now”, with strains not dissimilar to The Libertines, Best Coast and The Vaccines.
2011 is set to be a roller-coaster year for Yours & Mine: Having already recorded their debut single "Yesterday’s Girl" in mid-February, the trio are now looking forward to a spat of UK live shows and festivals, increasing the fast growing fan base, exciting photo-shoots and releasing an official music video to accompany the single release. They are also set to record their first album this summer - which will be available for download later this year.
The future is looking bright for this refreshing new band - watch this space!

Hundred Lies
Line-up
Richard Marinelli - Vocals/Guitars
Kursat Cataler - Drums
Paul Brown - Synths
Mark Thompson - Bass
Hundred Lies are an alternative rock band, which formed in 2010 on the Isle of Wight. The band consists of Richard Marinelli (vocals, guitars, synthesizers), Kursat Cataler (drums), Mark Thompson (bass, vocals) and Paul Brown (synthesizers, programming). Hundred Lies fuses electro with pop and rock elements, making for a sound that’s equally danceable and incredibly infectious. In the beginning there were two of them, Marinelli who was once a solo artist in his own right having MTV recognition with his single Maybe Tonight and Kursat an up and coming drummer who was keen to start a band. Whiling away a long, hot summer writing songs in their attic studio. Kurs complimenting Marinelli’s infectious tunes, with solid beats. The nucleus of the band was formed but at some point or other over those months, it became apparent to play live they need additional members.A chance encounter with established musician Mark offered the opportunity of a bass player. "We’d seen Mark in another band some time back but never thought he’d consider joining ours” -Kurs. All that was needed now was a synth player, in steps Paul Brown, member of Roll Tape and DJ from the Pink Pussycat. With the line up completed the band are now busy working on their live set for what looks to be an incredibly successful year.
Track: Yes
Slombers Woke
Line up
Paddy Cullen – lead vocals
John Sharman – guitar and backing vocals
Slombers Woke is Paddy Cullen and John Sharman. Paddy and John found themselves singing and drumming in the same band, Sidetracked. After creating musical fusion for a few years in island pubs and getting quite a reputation Sidetracked decided to have a rest.
By this time these two had put together a few numbers that they thought were too good to keep to themselves. An appearance or two with mates Crossfire persuaded them that it was time for Slombers Woke to take their songs to a wider audience......and change peoples lives forever.
Paddy does what he does best on lead vocals, and John has come out from behind the drums to pick up his guitar and sing. Their acoustic style and vocal harmonies are the springboard for their ideas, and make them sound on the folky side of alternative rock. In a bright future with a bigger sound, who knows...?
