ISLE OF WIGHT RADIO...SONY GOLD WINNERS 2007 FOR UK STATION OF THE YEAR
Radio Academy Station of the Year for the South and South East for the FOURTH consecutive year!

Here's what the judges had to say about your local radio station: ''Passion oozes out of this station from the lunchtime phone in to the I.O.W festival to the artist interviews! Great use of the listeners enjoyment of the station on the extracts CD. Always brought whatever they were doing or talking about back to their community and what would interest their local listeners.
The community buzz is captured across the station, they grasp the community spirit. The station is well and truly at the heart of the highs and lows of the island. They are side by side with their audience.Tailored questions in all interviews I heard, they don't shy away from asking the questions the listeners want answered. Maintain good control over their output. It's raw in places but that's what makes it engaging.
A proud station and one that deserves its continued success.''

ISLE OF WIGHT RADIO NEWS NOMINATED FOR HIGH PROFILE INDUSTRY AWARD

Isle Of Wight Radio has one of the best news teams in the UK - it's official. The IRN Awards recognise the best in commercial radio news and were held in London on February 23rd.

Isle Of Wight Radio was nominated for the Best News Coverage 2005 award. We were in the company of three of the biggest radio stations in Britain, including London's Capital FM, Hallam FM and Real Radio Yorkshire (all city stations with a target audience of over 1million).

Capital FM won the award for coverage which included their reporting of the London bombings. The judges described Isle Of Wight Radio as "exceptional" and award show presenter Katie Derham praised our "brilliant" entry.

We're thrilled to have been nominated and with 328 entries received it clearly puts Isle Of Wight Radio News head and shoulders above the rest of the radio industry.

UNPRECEDENTED HAT TRICK OF WINS!!!

Isle of Wight Radio has completed an amazing hat-trick by being named Radio Academy Station of the Year for the South and South East for the THIRD year in a row.

The station has once again beaten over 50 local radio stations (both BBC and commercial) to take home the award which is judged by a panel of radio experts. TV and radio personality Jamie Theakston presented the award to Andy Shier and Tom Stroud in London last night(Thursday)

The area covered by the award stretches as far north as Milton Keynes and also includes London and across to the Kent coast. The station is now once again shortlisted for UK Station of the Year at the prestigious radio ‘Oscars’ - the Sony Radio Academy Awards which are held in May. The judges were clearly impressed by what they heard ; ‘Isle of Wight Radio stands head and shoulders above all the other stations in its area. It’s clear that it superserves its community, ignoring strong mainland competition and continues to provide the Isle of Wight with some of the best radio in Britain. ’ Station Manager Andy Shier is understandably thrilled. ‘We’ve got a fantastic team at the station who make it all happen and its thanks to them and our thousands of loyal listeners and advertisers that we keep getting this amazing recognition’ Programme Controller Tom Stroud is responsible for the station’s day to day output. ‘Every time we win this award we keep thinking ‘we can’t win it again’ but here we are ! To the best of our knowledge no station has ever lifted the same award three years in a row so we’re clearly doing something right !! It’s an amazing achievement.’

Here's what the judging panel said about Isle Of Wight Radio:
"There's always a danger for local radio to be clichéd and small sounding but this one station sounded consistently professional and larger than life, whilst being obviously connected with its community. the Judges feel that...this station truly celebrated and championed it locality."

Andy Shier is IW Radio's Station Manager:
"To win this award once was amazing but to receive this acolade two years in a row is terrific news. It's great for us but it's also great for the Island to know that it's own local station is held in such high esteem across the country. We'd like to thank every one of our local listeners and advertisers for helping us make the best local radio there is!!"

Another industry award for ISLE OF WIGHT RADIO

Isle of Wight Radio’s Simon Butler won the 2005 IRN Award for Best Funny Story of the year . Simon collected a trophy and cash prize from Jon Snow of Channel 4 News at a ceremony in London. Simon was up against four other finalists who were whittled down from more than three hundred entries from commercial radio stations across the UK

The award was won by Isle of Wight Radio's story about a woman who was told to leave an amusement arcade because she was too good at winning money on the fruit machines!

Our news team of Simon Butler and Duncan Smith were also nominated at the 2006 IRN Awards. The team were up for 'Best News Coverage' which is one of the biggest categories. They beat over 330 other entries to make it to the final four - which itself is a magnificent achievement. They lost out in the final to Capital Radio who won it for the coverage of the London bombings.
