Police are investigating an alleged assault on a young girl in Ryde.

The 13 year old from the Island was crossing Queens Road in the town when a driver stopped a car next to her at 7.40am this morning (Tuesday) near the junction with Westwood Drive.

It’s alleged the motorist left his car, walked towards the girl and took hold of her by the wrist.

The man is also accused of getting angry with the girl for reasons that have yet to be fully established.

The girl managed to free herself from his grip and ran away. She was not physically injured. The man returned to his car and drove away.

Police say the 13 year old was left shocked and upset by the incident.

Inspector Andy Treagus said: "It’s important to reassure the community that initial enquiries have already confirmed there is no evidence to suggest these actions were an attempted abduction. The girl has told police that this man made no attempt to get her into the car. This report is not being linked to any other cases.

"Officers remain concerned about the upsetting effect the driver’s actions have had on this girl. This case is being treated as an alleged assault. Officers have spoken with the girl and her family, and are providing support for her welfare.

"Police are appealing for the public’s help to identify the man by issuing a description of him and the car. We would also appeal for the man himself to come forward and contact the police."

The man was described:

* White
* Approximately 6 ft tall
* Skinny build.
* Unshaven
* He appeared to have an orange, almost fake tanned complexion.

He was wearing:

* A black hat, which was baggy at the back.
* A black sailing-type jacket, which had a logo beginning with an 'A' on the chest.
* Black trousers.

The car was described as a Ford Fiesta, which was dark blue or black. The rear of the car was dirty with mud covering it.

The man or anyone with information is asked to contact police by phoning 101. Information can be given anonymously by calling the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
