Seafront Development Plans Rejected

Seafront Development Plans Rejected
By Mon, 27 February 2012 6:11PM

Plans to revamp Sandown seafront and build a multi-million pound apartment and bar complex have been rejected for a second time.

Wight City Leisure had applied to knock down the landmark Wight City leisure centre and replace it with 63 apartments, a restaurant/bar and new shops at Culver Parade.

The plans were rejected by Isle of Wight Council's planning committee as they were judged to be an overdevelopment and out of character with surrounding buildings.

The same reason had been given for previous rejections of the application.

Sandown Town Council had said before the meeting it had no objections to the development.

However a number of people objected to the development going ahead. Tara Rogers from Shanklin wrote to the local authority on behalf of people who currently attend Bogeys nightclub. She said "speaking for all the people who attend bogeys on the weekends of each month, we all would be very disappointed if it closed, it always has a very good atmosphere and everyone who works there are very helpful and friendly unlike other clubs on the island. If bogeys closed that would be one less place to go and there aren't many places to go for a night out as it is. The people who attend bogeys don't go down there to get unbelievably drunk; they go there to have a social drink and good time with their friends and family."
