Gatten and Lake Primary School Relocation Plans Go Before Council

Gatten and Lake Primary School Relocation Plans Go Before Council Gatten and Lake Primary School (c. Google)
By Lucy Morgan Thu, 31 May 2012 1:45PM

Plans to relocate Gatten and Lake Primary School in Shanklin to an existing school playing field will go before Isle of Wight Council's Planning Committee, on Thursday.

A number of concerned local residents have submitted comments to the local authority's website.

The scheme is being recommended for permission, but with conditions.

Short distance move

The proposed playing field site is around 200m from the current Howard Road building, but it is separated from the existing Gatten and Lake Primary school by a railway line.

The playing field is already owned by the school and is situated off Oaklyn Gardens and Green Lane.

Loss of field sparks community concerns

There are more than 30 responses on Isle of Wight Council's website. Some are in support of the scheme, while others cite concerns over the increase in traffic at school-run times and fears over the loss of a playing field that is used by the community.

New facilities planned

If the plans are given the go ahead, a games area, parking, and nursery facilities would be created. The new purpose-built school would be used by more than 200 pupils.

Isle of Wight planning councillors will consider the scheme to relocate Gatten and Lake Primary School in a meeting at County Hall in Newport, from 4pm.
