Cycling the Extra Mile to Help Local Young Lives!

Cycling the Extra Mile to Help Local Young Lives! David Edwards
Mon, 07 May 2012 4:48PM

Last Sunday (6th May) Wayfarers Cycling Touring Club held their annual round the Island Randonnee. This year's ride took place in a clockwise direction across the island covering a 100km/66 mile route and a shorter 55km alternative route.

David Edwards, from Newport decided to embark on this year 100km challenge and completed it in 5 hours and 50 minutes cycling time. Whilst entering a cycling event for the very first time, David chose to fundraise in aid of YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service who supports children and young people on the Isle of Wight to enable them to cope with the loss of someone important to them. David succeeded in raising a total of £348 (plus gift aid contributions).

Rather than starting from check point one in East Cowes, he began his mammoth challenge from his home in Newport, totaling a massive 70 miles! ‘I’m no professional when it comes to cycling, yet I still managed to complete it on my ATB which I ride to work. I had a couple of mechanical issues during the second leg of the route too but I managed to keep going……it was knackering but totally worth it for this fantastic cause’. David’s mum Lesley an Art Tutor who lives in Worcestershire, had even gone the extra mile by contributing £28 through a cake sale. David say’s ‘I would like to say a huge thank you to all my friends and family that cheered me on throughout the event and those who sponsored me’.

Anyone who wishes to, can make further donations through David’s JustGiving page http://www.justgiving.com/david-edwards-randonnee this will be open until July 2012.

If you would like to participate in a sponsored sporting event for YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service please contact Kelly Burke, YMCA Targeted Services Manager on (01983) 861072 or email cbs@ymca-fg.org.
