Home sweet home for sea scouts

Home sweet home for sea scouts Dame Ellen MacArthur opening the Cowes Sea Scouts headquarters with Capt Simon Merritt - Pictures by Christian Beasley
By Matt White Tue, 30 October 2012 9:44AM

After months of renovation work, the 2nd Cowes Sea Scouts headquarters has been officially re-opened.

Dame Ellen MacArthur opened the facility at a special ceremony attended by dignitaries, committee members, parents and members of the group.

The work included replacing the asbestos roof and installing new windows, flooring lights and security and fire alarms.

The building's boatshed was also rebuilt.

A £32,000 Biffa Award grant, £12,500 from Southern Cooperative and £9,800 from the National Lottery helped to fund the work.

The sea scouts also raised £11,000 with a sponsored row around the Island.

The headquarters was originally opened by Lord Mountbatten in 1977.

Group Scout Leader, Capt Simon Merritt said: "We are extremely pleased to be back in the building which is once again a magnificent headquarters and will serve the group well for the coming 30 years.

"Many thanks to everyone who has supported the group with funding, materials and especially to those who turned out for many long days of hard work to ensure this project was a success."
