A man and a woman who had fallen around 20 feet down cliffs at Freshwater Bay have been rescued by coastguard crews.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident near to the Albion Hotel on Military Road at 6:58pm on Tuesday.

The woman was winched to safety by the Lee-on-Solent based coastguard helicopter and transferred to Southampton General Hospital for assessment. The extent of her injuries is not yet known.

The Needles Coastguard rescue team went down the side of the cliff to rescue the man, who was being treated by paramedics at the scene. It is understood he was declining to go to St Mary's Hospital.

Coastguard crews were said to be finishing at the scene by about 8:40pm.

A coastguard spokesperson said the incident was due to be handed to police to establish what happened.
