Minister Eric Pickles chats to IW Council Leader David Pugh
Secretary of State for Local Government Eric Pickles is visiting the Isle of Wight to see local projects and rally the Island's Conservative party ahead of next year's elections.
The MP will be shown the Community Bus project in action, as well as visiting Cowes Enterprise College and seeing for himself the Apprenticeship scheme in operation at Gurnard Pines.
Mr Pickles will then meet with Isle of Wight Conservative Association members to discuss how the Conservatives are asserting themselves in the Coalition Government, and talk about how the party is planning for the next General Election.
Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh told IW Radio: "He's doing other visits in the South and I invited him to come across to the Island as well. Clearly, one of our roles as a council is to show the government some of the good work we've been doing here at a local level, particularly with a view to encouraging them to give us more funding in the future for particular projects - and we do have some Regional Growth Fund bids in at the moment, which we'll no doubt be talking to him about.
"So I think it's showing that the IW Council is playing its part in the deficit reduction strategy of the Government. Whilst we don't always agree with everything the Government does, the fact is we want to work with them, and wherever possible show how things at a local level - like the community bus scheme which is partly funded by the Government, partly funded by us - is working very well," Mr Pugh concluded.
