Fire crews' long service rewarded

By Emma Philo Tue, 25 September 2012 7:30AM

The dedication and commitment of the Isle of Wight's longest serving fire crews is being marked.

On Tuesday (25 September) eleven firefighters are being thanked for their long service at a ceremony at Haseley Manor, where they will be given special medals by the Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight on behalf of HM The Queen.

A total of seven firefighters and their families will be present at the ceremony; another four will receive the medal but are unfortunately unable to attend due to prior commitments.

Among the firefighters attending the event is Leighton Bryant, who joined the service in 1991 as a retained officer at Ventnor.

He is now Station Manager at Newport. He told IW Radio: "It's a recognition for the amount of time served, and within the fire service people who have served over 20 years are quite well respected. The fire service is built on people's experience and 20 years is a good milestone - the fact that it's given for good conduct as well should speak for itself."
