Rotary launches Shoebox Appeal

Rotary launches Shoebox Appeal
By Contributed Mon, 24 September 2012 6:55AM

This year’s Rotary International Shoebox Appeal is being launched during the week of 24th to 29th September 2012.

This year, for the first time, the shoeboxes will be going to Moldova, where deprivation and living conditions for many children are among the worst in Europe.

This year’s Shoebox Co-ordinator, Dianne Christopher of Sandown Rotary Club, said, “I was able to visit Moldova earlier this year and was shocked by the conditions that many children live in. There is an epidemic of TB in Moldova and I met children who had lost one or both parents. Many are living in shacks with no running water and little protection from the elements. It will be wonderful to give these children a little happiness at Christmas.”

Most of the Island’s primary schools will, once again, be asking their children to fill decorated shoeboxes with small gifts for these disadvantaged children.

For anybody else wishing to fill a shoebox, there will be collection points around the Island, including the Busy Bee Garden Centre, Ryde; County Press Offices in Pyle Street, Newport; Isle of Wight Radio at Dodnor Park, Newport; Moreys in Newport and Sandown; Lake Post Office; Islandwide Carpets in Ryde; Beresford’s Barber Shop in Cowes and Shorwell Post Office. Other local collection points are being arranged and will be confirmed as soon as possible.

All completed shoeboxes must be handed in by Friday 26th October at the very latest.

They will then be sorted and checked before being prepared for shipment to Moldova in time for Christmas.

More information, leaflets and details of collection points can be had from Dianne on 551894.
