Milk campaign goes to Westminster

By Emma Philo Mon, 17 September 2012 3:14PM

The "economics of the madhouse" is how the Island's MP has described to the Commons the way milk is shipped over from the mainland.

Andrew Turner has taken the plight of Island dairy farmers to Westminster during an industry debate.

Mr Turner told the new Farming Minister, David Heath MP and other MPs about the current "I love Isle of Wight Milk" campaign.

He said that 80% of Island milk is ferried across the Solent to the mainland, crossing with milk from the mainland being brought over to the Island, describing the current situation as "the economics of the madhouse".

During the speech he said: "Many local shops on the Island already stock local milk but Tesco is the only supermarket that currently sells Island milk.  I thank it for that.  I have written to other Island supermarkets asking them to do the same and give their customers the choice to support local farmers.  So far we have had interest from Waitrose, Southern Co-operative, Morrisons and Bookers.  I am still waiting to hear from others.  I am glad to say that last weekend Waitrose told me of its intention to sell Isle of Wight milk very soon.  There is a way through this."
