Wightlink passengers must leave car deck

By Emma Philo Thu, 13 September 2012 7:21AM

Passengers travelling on Wightlink's car ferries must now leave their vehicles when on board.

A new policy is being brought in from next month (1 October), in an effort to reduce disturbances for those living near their port at Fishbourne.

Wightlink says new rules from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency mean car decks have to be clear of all passengers whenever they're carrying hazardous goods.

According to the company, this means they have had to greatly increase the number of tannoy annoucements being made on board, causing a disturbance to neighbours in the village of Fishbourne.

As a result, the company says from 1 October, all passengers must leave their cars on both the Fishbourne and Lymington ferries.

Wightlink has apologised for any inconvenience.

The MCA has told Isle of Wight Radio that the rules are part of international legislation, and they have been in force for some time.
