Charity for Disabled Moldavian Children Opens

By Isle of Wight Radio Reporter Sun, 02 September 2012 7:29AM

A new charity for disabled Moldavian children has launched on the Isle of Wight.

MAD-Aid will operate on the Island for the benefit of disabled children in Moldova, who lack basic facilities such as mobility aids.

Many of the children are prevented from access to education and some are unable to leave their homes.

Victoria Dunford, the charity's founder, who was born and raised in Moldova, said: "Living in the 21st century, it is hard to believe that Moldova has no facilities for its 178,984 disabled people.

"The society is still very much behind the times. These people are the same as us, just much less fortunate, and we are here to try to help as much as we can," she added.

A former medical centre has been targeted in the north of Moldova to be converted into a rehabilitation and respite centre.

The launch event took place at East Cowes Town Hall on Saturday and was attended by the Moldavian Ambassador for the UK, Iulian Fruntasu.

The occasion featured a presentation about MAD-Aid's background and aims, as well as a free buffet, live music from local band Sporting Life, and a raffle.

MAD-Aid stands both for 'Medical Aid Delivered' and 'Make a Difference'.
