Rollercoaster Rescue Again At Blackgang

By Isle of Wight Radio Reporter Tue, 28 August 2012 2:07PM

A rollercoaster at Blackgang Chine remains closed today (Tuesday) after being evacuated over the bank holiday weekend.

Customers on the Cliffhanger rollercoaster were brought to a grinding halt on Sunday afternoon after hearing a loud bang.

Debbie Pothecary, from Fair Oak near Eastleigh, was one of the customers on the ride along with her 8-year-old son.

Visiting the Island on a day out, Debbie said the experience left her son hysterical.

"Obviously, there has been a problem before. I don't know what's been done with it, but it's left my son absolutely petrified.

"He probably won't want to go on another ride again. Well, I certainly wouldn't want to, but you don't want to instil that fear into a child who's so young," Debbie added.

Dan Selle, park manager, confirmed to Isle of Wight Radio the ride suffered a "technical fault" after a safety mechanism kicked in on the uphill climb.

He added, "Customers were taken down the stair well via our maintenance staff."

"We hope to have the ride open later this week."

Mr Selle has praised his staff for the way they dealt with the incident.

It's not the first time the Cliffhanger rollercoaster has failed. In April 20 people were evacuated from it by staff who erected scaffolding by the side of the rollercoaster to get the people off.
