Hampshire Police has confirmed that its officers are investigating reports of a "suspicious incident" in Parkhurst Forest, Newport.
A spokesperson told Isle of Wight Radio that there is no link between their presence in the forest and the case of missing Islander Damien Nettles who disappeared from Cowes in 1996.
Increased numbers of police officers were on scene on Sunday (26 August) afternoon and officers have been at the site since Friday.
A spokesman told Isle of Wight Radio that there was "no danger to the public".

Hampshire Constabulary has issued a statement:
"At around 3pm on Friday, August 24, a dog walker in Parkhurst Forest found a number of items believed to be connected to crime. Police were called and the area was cordoned off .
A cordon still remains. There is no danger to the public in the area. It is believed the items have been there for some time and are not connected to recent activity . Officers from Hampshire Constabulary are continuing their investigation."
