Islander killed in California

Islander killed in California Ian Ferguson, who died in California on 17th August (Image: Facebook)
By Chris Browning Wed, 22 August 2012 10:21AM

An Island man has been killed in a motorcycle collision in California.

Ian Ferguson, 32, from Cowes was riding a rented bike near Big Bear City, California where local media say he drifted into oncoming traffic.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told Isle of Wight Radio, 'we can confirm the death of a British national Ian Ferguson in California on 17th August.

'We are in contact with next of kin, and are providing consular assistance.'

Southampton's Mayflower Theatre has issued a statement saying, Ian was the IT Development Officer for the theatre for the last 8 years, and lived in Cowes on the Isle of Wight with his partner Corine. Originally from Powys, Ian joined the trust in June 2004. He created and ran the Mayflower’s website, using his talents to develop a site that was the envy of the industry. Ever the adventurer, he had had many holidays to far off destinations from Taiwan to Iceland and the US.

The staff at the theatre were stunned by the news of his death, and Dennis Hall, Chief Executive paid tribute to Ian, “Speaking on behalf of all the staff here at the theatre, I can say that we are all devastated at this tragic news. The Mayflower is one big family, and to lose one of our own, especially one as young and talented as Ian is a big blow to us all. Because of the nature of his role, he was known to virtually every member of staff in the company. All our thoughts go to Corine and Ian’s family in Devon at this sad time”.

Back on the Isle of Wight tributes are being paid on social networking sites. One reads, 'Ian was fantastic and a great friend whom would always give his time to others. He will be missed by myself for a long time to come. Love you Ian'.
