Delay to council swimming pool relaunch

By Emma Philo Wed, 15 August 2012 4:38PM Bad weather has delayed the re-opening of facilities at an Isle of Wight leisure centre. The swimming pool at the Heights in Sandown closed in January for refurbishments. The council says they'll now open on 15 October, a fortnight later than planned, but add that the existing gym and health suite are still available. John Metcalfe, the IW Council's deputy director of economy and environment, said: "While we have been enjoying recent warm weather, unfortunately the wet weather in June and July caused delays to the building works as the builders had to wait for the new roof over the swimming pool to dry in order to complete the final works to it. “We had feared that the delay would be a number of weeks but are pleased with the efforts of the builders to limit the delay to a only couple of weeks. It is always difficult with a refurbishment project to control all of the elements that can impact on planned works. “I am sorry that our users will not be able to use the facilities as soon as planned but am sure that they will feel the wait has been worth it when the pool and the new state of the art gym equipment are unveiled in October.” Swimming is available at Medina Leisure Centre, Newport where customers can use their One Card.
